WASHINGTON, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Major tornadoes thrashed multiple states in southeast United States on Saturday and Sunday, killing at least 18 people and causing material damage.
The states of Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Georgia are among those hit by extreme weather. 14 were killed in Georgia while four were killed in Mississippi.
Georgia Governor Nathan Deal on Sunday announced a state of emergency for seven counties in south Georgia.
Catherine Howden, a spokesperson for the state's Emergency Management Agency, said rescue dogs were dispatched to the region in search of survivors.
U.S. National Weather Service issued a warning Sunday saying ""a severe thunderstorm and tornado outbreak is expected today across north Florida and south Georgia.""

The reserve is home to one of China's famous plateau lakes andmore than 1,900 species, including the national protectedblack-necked crane.
With the Grass Sea big data monitoring system, the hydrological,environmental, meteorological and biological information of thereserve have been uploaded to a big data cloud under real-timesurveillance.
Chen Bo, head of Weining county where the lake is located and anewly-appointed "cloud chief," said the cloud was key to theecological protection of the reserve.
Guizhou is one of the least developed regions in China. Yet ithas become a pioneer in China's big data development due to itsbeneficial climate, power supply and network infrastructure. Bigdata is being widely applied in government management, business anddaily life.
The provincial government has set up a leading group for bigdata, with the provincial governor as leader. Leaders at variouslocal levels are the "cloud chiefs" responsible for big datadevelopment within their regions.
"The big data industry is a perfect opportunity for Guizhou todevelop its economy without introducing polluting industries, whilehelping its poor population shake off poverty," said Jing Yaping,deputy director of the provincial big data developmentauthority.
The United States tech giant Apple Inc announced the opening ofits first Chinese data center in the province in early July. Withan investment of 1 billion U.S. dollars, the data center plans tooffer iCloud services on the Chinese mainland.
Before this, China's three largest telecom operators, ChinaMobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, had all built data centersin Guizhou. Construction of a data storage center for Huawei hasalso began. Internet giants such as Alibaba and Tencent have alsomoved to establish cloud computing bases and big data centers.
Jing said Guizhou was also leading the country in opening upgovernment data. Opening up tax data has accelerated the creditinvestigations of local banks and their lending efficiency to smallcompanies. Opening up civil aviation data has fostered successfulmobile apps that offer accurate flight information and relatedservices to passengers.
Thanks to the opening up of road and logistics data, TruckAppliance, the only unicorn company in the province, is able tocreate an information sharing platform for China's 3.7 milliontruck drivers and 630,000 cargo owners. It had attracted totalfinancing of 370 million U.S. dollars as of May.
Guiyang Big Data Exchange, the first of its kind in China,started operation in April 2015. A total of 2,000 members exchangeand trade data-related assets and services with the transactionamount exceeding 45 million U.S. dollars so far.
A total of 28 big data scientific research institutions havealso been set up in the province, as well as 23 incubators andinvestment organizations.

BEIJING, March 30 (Xinhua) -- China's stocks rallied on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 2.77 percent to close at 3,000.64 points, tracking gains on Wall Street after U.S. Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen signaled a cautious approach to a future interest rate hike.
The smaller Shenzhen index surged 3.48 percent to end at 10,445.69 points. The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, rose 4.47 percent to close at 2,248.78 points.
Stocks increased across the board, with electronics, telecommunication equipment manufacturing and Internet finance leading the gains.
Shares of Guizhou Changzheng Tiancheng Holding Co. Ltd., an electronic product maker, surged by the daily limit of 10 percent to 12.42 yuan (1.90 U.S. dollars). Hithink RoyalFlush Information Network Co. Ltd. shares surged 8.2 percent to 79.19 yuan.
In other news, stock exchange filings showed late Tuesday that Wutongshu Investment Platform, which invests foreign exchange reserves, had been buying shares in two commercial banks. The news also helped boost market sentiment as investors believed the so-called "national team" was injecting cash into the market, analysts said.
Total turnover on the two bourses expanded to 628.4 billion yuan Wednesday, from 537.5 billion yuan on the previous trading day.
Overnight, Yellen's dovish comments lifted U.S. stocks, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 rising to their highest close of 2016. The NASDAQ Composite Index jumped 79.84 points, or 1.67 percent, to 4,846.62.
Speaking at the Economic Club of New York, Yellen said the Fed needed to "proceed cautiously in adjusting policy" given global risks.
